Independent Reviewing Officer

This is a professional employed by the Local Authority, often an experienced Social Worker, who will chair Looked After Child Reviews and Child Protection Conferences. They are also responsible for monitoring Children’s Services within the Local Authority and ensuring that the needs of the children are being met and statutory requirements are being followed. During Proceedings, the IRO will oversee the Care Plans for the children and should give their views to the Children’s Guardian. Whilst they are employed by the Local Authority, an IRO should remain neutral, and therefore if you feel something has not been done correctly you can contact them directly. For example, if you do not receive reports for meetings in good time, or your views are not sought.
