Emergency Protection Order (EPO)

This is a Court order which can be applied for by the Local Authority if they believe children to be at immediate risk of harm. Occasionally, this Order can be applied for without telling the parents of the children concerned. The Order lasts eight days and can be extended by the Court for another seven days. It allows the Local Authority to remove children from the care of whomever they normally live with or stop the children returning to live there, and can also be used to exclude someone from living in the same home as the children. Whilst your children are under the Order, the Local Authority share Parental Responsibility with parents, though the Local Authority will have the final say in any decisions to be made.
