This is a Court Order which legally severs the relationship between a child and their birth family. In the eyes of the law, the child would cease to be a member of their birth family, and would become a member of their adoptive family. In the UK, a child can be placed for adoption with or without parental consent. If the Court judges it to be in the child’s best interests to grow up away from their birth family, it can make an Order that dispenses with the need for parental consent. An Adoption Order as it stands currently is permanent and lasts for the lifetime of the child.
